Laurie Simmons’ Walking Objects series was inspired by a distant memory of an advertisement of dancing cigarette packets. The idea of ordinary objects coming to life got legs and eventually the photographs that were produced in the late eighties translated into Alvin Ailey II dancers for a musical called “the Audition” that Simmons filmed last year. It should come as no surprise that the dancing iced cake won the lead part before the dancing pocket watch even had a chance to perform.
