Brian Ulrich reminds us that U.S. citizens were encouraged to shop in 2001 to show their patriotism through their consumerism. His photographic project Copia is a reflection of this consumerism as big box retail is juxtaposed with the more humble thrift stores and backroom punch card stations. These large format photos force the viewer into examining social class and economics, cultural imprints and ecological concerns, political programming and our roles in all of this. This study of the shopping complex shows just how complex shopping can be.
