Award | Dec 6, 2006

The winner of this year’s Turner Prize was announced on Monday and Tomma Abts walked away with the £25.000 award. Abts was chosen for her exhibitions of abstract paintings that consistently measure 48 x 38 centimetres. Abts faces her blank canvas, which lies flat on a table, without any notion of the finished product, carefully layering and overlapping shapes in oil and acrylic. And when the work is done, the artist uses a German dictionary of regional first names to name her paintings.
