San Francisco-based Miya Ando Stanoff creates quiet works of zen, using pigment and steel. Stanoff uses metal panels to depict meditative scenes that are meant to evoke “solitude, nothingness, tranquility and the transitory nature of things”. Not surprisingly, Stanoff counts East Asian Buddhist Iconography amongst her studies. To create her canvases, Stanoff uses metalworking techniques such as grinding, sanding, patinas and heat, also using other materials to build texture into her works. Her pieces are like examinations of the horizon, far away where sea and sky must meet.
