Iceland-born, New York-based, Thordis Adalsteinsdottir creates large-scale paintings where composition is key. Her works are deceptively simple, using few colours and minimal elements, yet the sparseness by no means equates to an emptiness. Emotion and eroticism lurk beneath the surface. The backgrounds are often monochromatic or lightly patterned, the subjects (both human and animal) a little out of proportion, but all this combines to put forward a soft subtlety that tells the stories woven by the painting of Thordis Adalsteinsdottir.
