"Slack"
Maine artist John Bisbee specializes in one-ton sculptures of 12-inch nails or spikes. Often the spikes are welded together, but Bisbee’s latest works (Helio, Tarn) are comprised of carefully placed nails that balance upon each other. The pieces, which are made up of tens of thousands of nails, look deceptively simple, but when the dimensions are taken into consideration one realizes that a fair bit of thought must go into how to stage these installations. After all, both artist and venue must be strong enough withstand the sheer physicality of it all.
