Amy Cutler’s world of gouache on paper is inhabited mostly by women who are always up to something, but not necessarily in the more traditional sense of working or mothering. Cutler’s girls fly kites while bricklaying, or chuck cakes while hiding in the woods. They strap chairs to their heads, or houses, or horses to their backs. With gusto they break dishes or travel by elephant, all in the most picturesque of ways. Cutler’s work is detailed and defined, clean but with much pattern – simply, art that’s fun to look at.
