The bodies that are often the subjects of Nicola Tyson’s paintings are distorted and pulled out of shape, so it is difficult to decide whether her works are figurative or abstract. The proportions of the bodies result in a general freakishness where one is left wondering if the bodies are masked and costumed in preparation for a parade, perhaps of limbs in movement. Even where there are no bodies, a sort of dance applies, as in Stars and Waves, where we are given a cartwheel of red and blue.
