It came as no surprise to learn that Elizabeth McGrath is a resident of the world of fantasy otherwise known as Los Angeles. Her mixed media sculptures and shadow boxes (more stages for the characters, rather than mere frames) are intricately designed works that showcase otherworldly creatures of McGrath’s creation. It has to be said that these characters are creepy; some are wounded, most look quite macabre. Yet despite the mummified air about them, it is clear that McGrath’s creatures are the product of incredible imagination and talent. Inexplicably, undeniably appealing, each diorama is almost like a new act in a vaudeville freak show.
