"Velish Moranding"
by sabine7 / January 18, 2006

Matthew Dennison’s characters, with their large and detailed faces, are almost androgynous, or, at any rate, willing to wear dresses. Dennison plays with scale (characters in the same painting are rarely of the same size) as much as he does with words, creating serious-sounding titles by using made-up names and odd combinations of words. Dennison’s paintings tell stories of another world and each painting seems to be a piece of a larger picture, or complete text.
