German painter André Butzer’s work is nothing if not fascinating. His characters are a mix of skeletal, happy grim reaper types with exposed bones and skull-like heads and ragdolls with cartoon eyes and pilgrim collars. One cannot help but be struck by the energy and intensity in Brutzer’s work, but then the almost M&M looking heads of some subjects call for a pause. What is the reality here? Grotesque with a smile.
