"Hancock Monuments, New Bedford"
Remnants of the cityscape attract the eye of painter Carolyn Swiszcz who tries to capture dormant areas of urban life while at their most quiet. The subjects of Swiszcz’s paintings are indicative of action and vibrancy, but the artist catches them while they seem almost abandoned. Hancock Monuments is a business, not a graveyard and all the newspaper boxes and pay phones look as though they have never been touched. The shop that offers custom rims gives nothing away of speed and flash. In turning her subjects into ghosts of themselves, Swiszcz forces the viewer to take a second look and feel a mood or a tone before moving on.
