Canadian artist Brian Jungen provides us with a cultural twist with his collection of sculptures depicting West Coast native masks created out of Nike running shoes. For Prototype of New Understanding series Jungen takes apart the runners at the seams in order to re-stitch them as reminders of ceremonial masks and the ceremony of consumerism. The sports shoes are predominantly red, white and black, a scheme which mirrors colours used in Northwest Coast art. The obvious result of mixing contemporary native identity with Air Jordans is a collection of jolting thought-provokers.
