One cannot help but be struck by the simple beauty in Roe Ethridge’s photos of pigeons in mid-flight. The question is: does finding out that these are professional stunt pigeons who perform in films and hail from Universal Studios interfere with our appreciation? Of course not. The beauty is in the photograph and the skill of the artist, not the expertise of the subject. And likewise, Ethridge’s shot of the rich layering of highways at an Atlanta junction becomes an example of graphic patterning while commenting on industrial development and the fast pace of life today.
