Burnt Babiche Chair
Dutch designer Maarten Baas has a thing for burning iconic twentieth century furniture, and here he goes further back in time to scorch a limited edition of three French-Canadian ‘babiche’ kitchen chairs, similar to the ‘Where There is Smoke’ collection. These traditional chairs can date back to the seventeenth century and are still fully functional despite having been burnt. This functionality is an integral part of Baas’ work. Each chair of this series commissioned for Commissaires in Montreal exhibits a different level of treatment, going from nicely charred to perilously fragile-looking.
