Sally Gall’s haunting black and white photographs are usually unpeopled landscapes, formal gardens or striking bits of topography, but when people do make it into her frame, they do so less as characters and more as compositional elements that come with the scenery. Gall’s Water’s Edge series touches on any manner of waterscape, ranging from the crystalline stillness of a swimming pool to an old-fashioned swimming cap bobbing on gentle waves to a classical reflection of Belgian trees on a river. Evidence of Wind and Visitation are captured moments from the collection called Between Worlds. Gall gives us photos that are soothing, photos that allow us to take a break from the pace, to stop and catch our breath.
