Minneapolis artist John Alspach creates “paintings” by using photographic chemicals on photo paper to produce abstracts that at first glance could be mistaken for prints of oils. Alspach takes his inspiration from the materials he uses and thrives on using found materials to be both base and subject of his work. This series is themed around discarded photo paper that he came across, others have been based upon old billboards or nineteenth-century book covers. Whatever the material, Alspach’s goal is to create something new out of something old, while remaining faithful to some of the original ideas.
