"Even for still lifes, they were eerily still"
Almost as though seen through a rain-covered windshield, some of the soft focus paintings of Belgian watercolourist Fred Michiels evoke a sense of having stumbled upon a private moment. Eerily Still, with its mannequin torsos waiting to be clothed, is particularly evocative of this feeling. Although Michiels has other brighter paintings, the sense of atmosphere carries through to his ghost house in a field where the viewer must ask the following: to whose imagination does this structure belong?
