Chutes is Montrealer Gwenael Belanger’s series of colour photos depicting a variety of objects caught in a free fall. A doll flies head first towards the ground, a bad-hair day in the making. A black forest cake heads into sure destruction. A vase is in one piece for only a few more seconds. But until then, Belanger’s falling objects are frozen in time, intact. Another set of photos in the series shows one object at a time falling into the pile of debris that builds up once the carnage begins, so the viewer is not frustrated by not knowing the eventual outcome.
