Dana Schutz’s recent paintings will not disappoint anyone who has come to expect wildly garish expressions of a malevolent ‘other’ world teeming with bizarre characters and actions. Her Fanatics (vaguely suggestive of Maurice Sendak’s Wild Things) have broken down the fence in pursuit of their goals or quarry, while the Men’s Retreat is a bout of team building gone amok. And these are just the tamer examples of Schutz’s pieces of work this year. Of course, the scary thing is that Schutz’s ‘other’ world looks an awful lot like ours.
