The work of Pilar Albarracin is a body of provocative feminist videos, photo series and installations that often turns traditional Spanish symbols on their heads. Albarracin takes a starring role in her presentations which can take the viewer straight through the Catholicism of Biblical scenes to more Iberian-specific iconography involving flamenco dancing, sausages and bulls. Her Ceiling of Offerings is a group of about 500 flamenco dresses hung from the ceiling as an expression of the Andalusian woman’s traditional role. The dresses are sometimes offered up at church in gratitude for intercessions, female offerings in a male-dominated world.
