"Cloud Gate"
by sabine7 / September 12, 2005

The very popular Cloud Gate in Chicago’s Millennium Park, designed by British sculpting superstar Anish Kapoor is his first public outdoor installation in the US. The sculpture, a 110-ton ellipse, is covered in hand-rolled stainless steel plates, highly polished to reflect those who pass underneath to enter the plaza not to mention the sky, the clouds and the buildings all around. Liquid mercury was Kapoor’s inspiration for the sculpture, 66 feet long and 33 feet wide, with an archway of twelve feet, but the Cloud Gate is often compared to the simple jellybean (The Bean, much to official chagrin). Cloud Gate (as yet not completely finished) will remain uncovered and accessible to the public throughout the month of September.
