"Backyard"
Going from the Kitchen to the Backyard was an obvious and natural progression for Liza Lou. Backyard was a 525 square foot project that involved many volunteers, as Lou realized that to create each blade of grass needed for a patch of her lawn, it would take practically a village. Beads were twisted onto wires which were then inserted into a papier mache surface. Papier mache was a key element in Backyard in order to make the installation lighter, and easier to strike up and down for traveling, so Lou used fewer actual items this time round, possibly having regretted choosing a real kitchen stove for her previous project.
Liza Lou’s next solo exhibition takes place in January 2006 at London’s White Cube.
