Yun-Fei Ji is a Beijing-born artist who mixes traditional Chinese symbolism and techniques with a decidedly modern approach. Ji combines scenes from contemporary China with dream sequences and mythologies, updating a traditional culture without abandoning its ways. Ji uses mineral pigments on xuan, or mulberry, paper, with a combination of both wet and dry brush techniques, achieving an intentionally antiqued effect. The subjects and characters to be found in his paintings can be so muted as to appear as ghosts in the background, evoking the centuries of history that influence Ji’s work. Reading in between the lines is key in order to appreciate the many layers of political and social commentary present in the works of Yun-Fei Li.
