“What would a kid’s drawing look like if painted realistically?” asks artist Dave Devries. The illustrator of comic books and video games uses his animation skills to take the drawings of monsters and superheroes made by schoolchildren and build on the illustrations until they become real characters or fleshed out pieces of art. To make things that are not real look real, Devries created The Monster Engine, a multi media book that shows the process of going one step further with kids’ art, complete with interviews with the child artists themselves.

To show more kids’ art, all grown up, Devries has plans for various other ‘engines’, covering the circus, the undersea world and the superheroes, hoping eventually to build it all into a movie.
