The Butler’s in Love by American Mark Stock provides the viewer with a narrative mystery added to by other paintings of the series. Unheard Expression gives us a glimpse into some secret correspondence, perhaps the letter hidden in the pendant lamp of Stash. But to whom does the lipstick left on the glass in Minute Significance belong? Stock leaves us with several different ladies in dark and elegant drawing rooms, any one of whom could be either a distraught love interest or a confused murderess.
