Wall of Light Deep Red by abstract painter Sean Scully is typical of his broad bands of colour. Combining influences from the early modernists Mondrian and Matisse with those of later ones Rothko and Pollock, Scully has made his mark in the area of modern abstraction. The minimalism of Scully’s paintings forces the true viewer to eventually think of things other than the vertical and horizontal stripes presented. He tends not to use the diagonal very often, preferring instead to set up the contrasts between the vertical and horizontal shapes, leaving the viewer to suss out everything in between.
