"Fitting In"
Miami painter Hernan Bas creates a languid world of sensuous young dandies living out their heartaches in scenes lifted from the Hardy Boys and Boy Scout manuals. The skinny boys (Bas even went through a phase of using Slimfast as medium, influenced by Joseph Beuys’ use of fat) wear a touch of androgyny about them, but Bas makes no bones about the fact that the “nouveau sissy” is a modern icon of style. His works are narratives that tell of alienation and frustration within the context of the gay mainstream, but apply to any individual confused about sexuality, emotional well-being and convention.
