"Killing Time"
by sabine7 / June 4, 2005

Australian sculptor Ricky Swallow is his country’s representative to the Venice Biennale this year, based largely on the recent critical success of Killing Time, a life-sized carving of a seafood-laden dining table. Swallow’ father was a commercial fisherman in Melbourne and the oysters, fish and lobster of Swallow’s still life are symbolic of the catch he came to know as a child. Swallow works with the patience and skill of an old world craftsman, but in addition to his fine hand and artisanship he has paid special attention to the lighting of the various tableaux that make up this work.
