Matt Brown is a student at the Umea Institute of Design working on a masters degree in Interaction Design. His final degree project, Food and the Future of it, includes some intriguing design future concepts that "either print food or grow food". Inspired by technologies that are available today such as 3D printers and lab grown meat, his thesis is that by 2040 we could all have devices at home that could grow meat and print food. One concept that could make it in 2009 however is the the Flavor Spoon (above); "It's pretty easy to use, you chop up some garlic, or anything with strong flavor, and put it in the pink spoon. After that, you put the white spoon over it - they fit right together. Then you just start eating your soup, and you'll have the flavor of whatever you hid inside the spoon in every bite." Also known as the Recession Spoon, "If you're really broke, and I tried this, you can just eat hot water with it." More after the jump.

Among the highlights of the off-site shows in New York was InDisposed, an exhibition curated by Jen Renzi (a MoCo contributor) and Dan Rubinstein. Designers were asked to create objects that examined the themes of waste and wastefulness in their use and production.

Highlights of the show included Atema Architecture's Auto-Cannibalistic Table, Redstr/Collective VS Kao's CAMPstyle Lounge Chair, Takeshi Miyakawa's Furniture To Go and the winners of Mio's Loop Open Source Design Competition. More after the jump.

Pratt Institute: Design for a Dollar

Great constraints seem to trigger great creativity. Pratt students were showing off their creativity at ICFF last weekend with an excellent and refreshing exhibit of works titled Design for a Dollar. The student exercise was, as the title suggests, to design an object that could be made for the cost of a dollar. Exploring and finding different creative solutions to the constraints, the results were quite ingenious and attractive, two elements that (unfortunately) don't always go hand in hand.

16943_frst_tv_concept_sculpture.jpg
Studio FRST's new TV concept, 16943, is presented as a technological sculpture, a black picture on a glass base. The screen is designed to work as a 2-in-1, offering two formats for viewing: a 16/9 format for films and 4/3 for television. This concept is based on the needs filled by contemporary screens.

staffan_holm_newton_table.jpg
+ Staffan Holm and Dan Sunaga are the designers of the Newton coffee table, which uses two rings of pressure-molded wood as a base. The edges of the rings are forced towards the centre, creating curves that became the table's signature.

+ Joy de Vivre has come up with a new concept for modular latticework suitable for urban dwelling. Cellule is made from UV stabilized polypropylene and can be used indoors and out. A system of snap legs and pegs allow the lattice wall to expand or be moved. The modules can be attached to most surfaces with ease and there is a tidy cap to hide all hardware. The curved surfaces allow climbing plants to weave in and out quite nicely.

+ The IScreen from Li-Rong Liao is a modular screen composed of laser cut units of plywood and Masonite. This pattern is made up of the letters in LISA, but eventually patterns will be customized from any characters.
