20/30 by Raphaël Charles

20-30_rug_raphael_charles.jpg
Lumps of foamy coal make up the 20/30 rug by Belgian designer Raphaël Charles, and extra nuggets are scattered along the periphery. The name of the carpet is in reference to a standard calibre of coal, raising questions about energy and the future. In the here and now, however, the rug is a cosy spot that beckons bare feet. Arihiro Miyake has used recycled PET bottles to create Fort, a sound-absorbing room divider made up of individual "bricks" held together by magnets. The lightweight modules allow the partition to assume a variety of shapes and sizes. Vases do double duty as message centres, as the Pisarro range offers either a chalkboard or whiteboard surface for note-taking. Little Saigon is a mirror grouping by Studio Taschide that is pretty enough on its own, without any faces peering into it.

Torr by Nicolas Bovesse

torr_nicolas_bovesse_2.jpg
The Torr Vase by Nicolas Bovesse is named after Evangelista Torricelli, the inventor of the barometer. Based on the principle of the space and atmospheric pressure on water, the water in the bottle will flow only when flowers are placed in the wire support and are ready to drink. Another design by Bovesse is the Éclat mirror that appears to be moving at a jaunty angle within its form. An idea that mixes plant life and angles is Mule, a plant rack that acts as room divider by Nikolaj de Hansen of Danish collective No Problem. Kenji Fukushima's mobiles are an airy, easy way to lighten up a space.

Objects for the Age of Obama

objects_for_the_age_of_obama.jpg
Objects for the Age of Obama was an exhibition of work by design students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The products are a selection of objects "inspired by Change, Hope, Challenge and Allure." These everyday objects have a flavour of Obama about them, or are simply influenced by current events that can be linked to a new age. Greg Bethel's Collective Clock is one such object. A cluster of ball bearings moves as one, representing the unification of Americans moving towards the future. The Paper Trail Clock by Andrew Peerless is a cross between a digital clock and a to-do list. As the sheets are torn off, the pad begins thinner and the time is easier to read. The Discipline Desk by Eric Hotchkiss is linked to the idea of personal responsibility, so the user is confronted by unfinished work inside the desk that must be completed. The clutter is obscured by a polarizing film when the user approaches or stands over the desk, but as he or she sits, it becomes all too clear that there is work to be done. Evan Walsh's Diplomacy Tool Kit is designed to promote negotiation and facilitate relationships between users by offering choices, opportunities for mediation, or even a simple break. And Gabriel Hargrove's Secretarial Ashtray (above) is a subtle smoking accessory that tries not to call attention to such a habit.

The Man With No Shadow by Makoto Tojiki

The Man With No Shadow by Makoto Tojiki is a life-sized LED light sculpture of a man that welcomed visitors to Tojiki's stand at SaloneSatellite. The Man was just one of some very interesting lighting projects by Tojiki. Tobias Franzel also got a lot of attention by challenging passersby to a quick game of ping-pong. Franzel is the designer of a door that flips into a ping-pong table for two players. Birds on a wire are a common outdoor scene, so why not put them to work on a clothesline? Angelo is a bird-shaped clothespin by Valentina Frosini. And students from the product design department of the University of Lincoln had a solid variety of work at their stand, including some sharp laser cut clock towers.
