ddw_kidbalance.jpg
It should come as no surprise that bicycle designs are regular features in Eindhoven. Kid Balance by Niels Smeltink is a scooter that transforms into a bicycle with the push of a panel, and the 2cycle by Menno Kroezen is a new twist on a tandem that makes double riding more companionable. Other sights spotted by Huibert van Muilwijk included the Curiosity Cabinet by Jon Stam, Sunday Roast tableware by Annemiek Dovee, and the Obsession/Control Obsession table by Nadia Pedreschi. As well, there were pieces by Sander Lucas, Maarten Baptist, Mieke Cuppen and Just Design: Tok. A particularly fetching display consisted of the Captured View glasses by Isabelle Scholtemeijer atop Lotte van Laatum's Tree Cabinet.

This Week At Art MoCo

week_listfield.jpg
Scott Listfield's astronaut helps to situate us in the present. He is able to go from a country retreat to an iceberg to a Laundromat with Boba Fett.

week_baker.jpg
Kim Baker's vision of the Vancouver Olympics is not quite as sporty as some would like, as she points out some of the associated social ills.

week_ghirri.jpg
Luigi Ghirri's photography is full of real-life collage and moments of confusion.

week_perfect.jpg
Dan Perfect's paintings can be taken as a visual depiction of thoughts, feelings and everything else that's racing around inside.

week_honksalo.jpg
Everything has gone to the pigs in Reima Honkasalo's digital prints.

London Highlights: Jonas Wagell's Mini House
Posted by sabine7 Architecture | 30 Oct 08 | Comments (0) | Stumble

wagell_house1.jpg
Jonas Wagell's flatpack, prefab Mini House was developed as a response to the increase in size allowed for an extra house on a single property in Sweden. The permitted size is 15 sq. meters, but Wagell's Mini House appears more spacious because a permit-free pergola is attached to the enclosed space. The sliding door connects inside and outside, and the porch functions as a canopied outdoor room. There are various modules available (sleep unit, cook unit, sauna module, etc) that are made to fit inside the Mini House. Wagell is also an industrial designer with a variety of products to his name, such as the Symbiosis Lamp, the Tilt collection of glassware and the Ängby line of outdoor furniture.

Ronen Kadushin's Hard Copies Open Design

kadushin_italic.jpg
Ronen Kadushin's Hard Copies collection of furniture and lighting features limited edition designs of a simple flatpack nature. The elegance of these pieces lends itself well to gallery display, but Hard Copies are also Open Design, which means that the designs can be downloaded from Kadushin's website and produced by anyone interested. Kadushin encourages modification and redistribution and only asks that producers share revenues from commercial use.

ddw_17a_marieke_stap.jpg
Marieke Staps showed a soil-powered clock, Jón Bjornssson featured Bucket, black sand from Iceland mixed with epoxy to create a table, a wine cooler and a flower box, and Nathan Wierink featured Joints. The Move & Groove by Simon Sopamena is a bicycle for children who use a wheelchair and the Oak Lifestyle Bike from Reinier Korstanje adds to the traditional frame. The Speeltegel by Eefje van Gemert animates the pavement, and although the Stad op maat by Timon van der Hijden looks like a toy city, the skyscrapers are lights, the church is a clock and the factory is a wall socket. Marly Gommans had a whole line of cat furniture and Philippe Malouin showed the Dervish light, the blow up Grace table and the handy Hanger chairs. Although Charlotte Dumoncel D'Argence showed a World in Decay, there was (Nothing to) Hide from Willem de Ridder.

daniel-emma_pentagon.jpg
Daniel-Emma Design Studio focused on shapes during 100% Design London. Daniel and Emma presented a fan, a radio, a table, a dinner set and a cupboard that used a square, a triangle, a circle and a pentagon. Jo Cope's Storage Arm cried out for attention, but her Self-Extension bag was more subtle. To hold, the user must insert her hand right into the bag to grasp the handle. This bag also can be laid out as a mat. There are fewer than few commercial design studios in Poland and DBWT is one of them. The Onion Lights by Daria Burlinska was one of the DBWT displays. Libelle Decor was also on hand with a variety of lighting with influences that ranged from classical to organic.
