We don’t usually think of using carpet anywhere else but the floor, so work by carpet collective Fun on the Floor caught our attention. A Georgian townhouse in London has undergone a colourful transformation: carpet is used as a wallcovering in the hallway, as upholstery in the living room, and to accessorize every room of the house. Carpet is used to cover surfaces in the bedrooms, to create leaves for the jungle theme of the kids’ bedroom, and to replace the standard moose trophy in the front hall.

More products from Young Blood Designers Market during Sydney Design 08 showed a real focus on flat: flatpack lighting and accessories, flat vinyl wall art and (fairly) flat decks. Autumn Products featured the Petal and Metal Petal light fixtures and the Ladybug fruit holder; Totem Decks had their laser engraved decks (Canadian maple) on hand; and Flat Bird Wall Stickers made it easy to change up the scenery. California collective Molla Space had a nifty display of works by Nobuhiro Sato of Kyoto-based studio Pull+Push. Sato puts his background in cement modelmaking—and his abiding interest in architecture—to good use in his clever designs, which include sculptural concrete vases, incense pots, and coasters. Our fave: his Mansion planters, incredibly detailed miniature homes complete with little staircases and windows. They’re witty, but also quite poetic, bearing the earmarks of painstaking, even obsessive, handcraftsmanship. A green home for your greenery!

Brooklyn-based Designfenzider has launched a new line of candlesticks and candelabras designed by Ron Gilad and made of materials such as cherry wood, concrete, stainless steel, aluminium and powder coated metal. The candleholder sections are gold- and silver-plated, and attached magnetically. Candlestick No.5, above, casts a great shadow, but all of them are terrific balancing acts.
