Milan Design Week 2008: BCXSY - Forever!

Boaz Cohen and Sayaka Yamamoto make up the design team of BCXSY. Based in Eindhoven, BCXSY was recently at the Salone Satellite in Milan. We were very happy to met up with them and get a firsthand look at their new collection, based on the concept of Forever. The idea behind the Forever dish is “never go hungry”, and even when the food has been eaten, the relief on the bottom of the plate reminds us of the food we have. The blanket is inspired by the moebius strip, to provide eternal rest, and is very cosy. The vases for dead flowers allow appreciation cut flowers once they have dried, and the Pot∞Vase provides spots for both growth and display. The Infinity aquarium contains fish swimming around in circles and the Golden Glory collection is a series of cheap plastic objects that have been gilded by hand to make them objects of value.

Like a forest of wire

I had the chance to meet South-Korean designer Kwangho Lee right before the recent opening of a solo-exhibition of his recent work at Montreal's Mile-End Commissaires. The design boutique/gallery is showcasing Lee's series of light installations, lamps made and shaped by knitted and purposefully tangled electric wire.

Lee has been making these lamps for two years now. His initial idea was simple, to turn the lamp inside-out, getting rid of the lamp shade and body, keeping only the essentials, thus exposing the customary hidden wires. He studied wire weaving, exploring traditional techniques and the subtleties of electric wiring for his final grad project in design school. Combining that knowledge to the lamp sculpting came instinctively, treasuring fond memories of his mother knitting sweaters or gloves, he tackled and tweaked the traditional techniques to suit his craft.

Key for you

Music instrument maker Yamaha was in Milan this year showing some prototypes for a collection of new keyboard based instruments that fit nicely into lifestyles; there was Key as journey above for those that travel, Key as gift "like a wooden toy, treasured for always", Key between people for music between friends, and Key like jeans for a more personal, relaxed experience. Per Yamaha, "Keys are important; something that everyone possesses. We would like to offer everyone an array of keys, in the hopes of giving the people who come to our exhibition some insight into the bond between people and instruments, and the human relationships that music fosters between people.". Via Dezain.
