This Week at Art MoCo

week_inky_jun_07.jpg
The week at Art MoCo started as many weeks often do, with thoughts of bludgeoning all those nasty Monday things that get in the way. The Inky Dreadfuls drawings by Michael Mararian were very helpful in this respect.
week_salazar_jun_07.jpg
Things settled down on Tuesday with Souther Salazar’s cheerful and calming collages took us away to more delightful surroundings.
week_lerma.jpg
Then José Lerma startled us slightly with fleshy bits and body parts, most of which bore some resemblance to Pinocchio.
week_reginato.jpg
Peter Reginato let us lose ourselves in his abstract paintings, a two-dimensional change from his sculptures.
week_kang.jpg
And Hyung Koo Kang ended the week with several rather serious gazes from the likes of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. SM

2 Questions for Big-Game
Posted by sabine7 Interview | 28 Jun 07 | Comments (0) | Print Posts

big_game_designers_2.jpgPutting a spin on the idea of ‘less is more’, the Big-Game designers, Grégoire Jeanmonod, Elric Petit and Augustin Scott de Martinville, recently launched their Plus is More collection, comprising a chair, chandelier, coat rack, dumbbells, rug and sweatshirt. The idea is to bring a ‘plus’ to a basic starting point, be it material, principle or archetype.

Our favorite amongst your recent designs have got to be the Bold chair, the Miles rug and the Link chandelier, all of which interpret an idea of connection and interconnectedness. Are these curves coincidence or did you mean for this to be a theme to Plus is More?
The idea behind "Plus is More" is to use a simple strategy to create objects. "Bold" is a chair structure that becomes functional under the effect upholstery. "Link" is a pragmatic tool to create a chandelier out of basic light sources. "Miles" is a rug that is born from children's playing habits. We never use shapes as a starting point, always ideas. So I guess the interconnectedness and the curvy forms must come from the unconscious part of our brains.

MoMA Preview

moma_fall_2007.jpg
Last week I was invited to preview the MoMA Store's Fall/ Winter collection. Like their current Spring/ Summer collection, the products they showed were smart, playful, and only vaguely articulated the season. The buyers seemed to be particularly into monochromatic colors, geometric patterns, and use of materials that pushes the boundary of manufacturing, in a few cases subverting accepted material applications. More after the jump. JR

Joey Roth
Posted by Harry Announcements | 27 Jun 07 | Comments (0) | Print Posts

MoCo Loco welcomes another contributor this week, Joey Roth. We had written about Joey's designs before meeting him at the first Design Blogfest in 2006. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Joey Roth is an industrial designer who uses stories as the initial sketches for his products. Joey used to be a student of creative writing, and loved it because it allowed him to construct entire worlds for his characters. While at Swarthmore he realized that he would rather tell stories through physical objects, and still strives to make each product an immersive world.
