Diecut felt neckpieces. Recently awarded the 2006 Metropolis Award for the Best Collection at Studio North Toronto Interior Design Show, Lily Yung has created an innovative collection of jewelry and home accessories using die cut wool felt. The material is hand assembled with no extra hardware and can be adjusted in length by the user, to make it into a collar or bracelet. Using the diecuts she also makes tactile 3D panels for screens, space dividers, or throws and bed spreads. The remaining web of the felt is also used as screens. JGB

Delft eye patch. Damian O'Sullivan redesigns medical prosthesis in the hope of arriving at more dignified solutions. "Pity them who have broken their leg, not for the inconvenience of their condition, but for the sheer ugliness of the prosthetic devices they have to contend with. Why can't we offer more solace in such moments of need, be exalted to latter-day-dandies instead of having to traipse around with such plastic contraptions?". Damian's exploration isn't so much about forms, as it is material: porcelain. "A fragile yet strong material, hygienic whilst elegant, in other words with all the right paradoxical sought after qualities.". Thanks Damian!

Handle With Care

lisa_smith_handle_with_care.jpg
Lisa Smith's Handle With Care is a series of bags that makes innovative use of materials, closures and handles. The material combinations; basket weaving in leather, porcelain handles with rubber cast inserts, leather with silkscreen prints, terra-cotta with a metal cast core, and a large bronze hook or a ball and joint closure in aluminum and plastic. "The seed of this project lay in the frustration of the lack of innovation in the hard components (closures and handles) within the bag and apparel industry. As a result, these bags have been designed around the components instead of them simply being an after thought.". The collection will be presented in Milan next month. Thanks Lisa!

This Week at Art MoCo

week_molk_mar_06.jpg
We started off by storm-trooping the beach with French artist Marc Molk whose collages and works of paper are intriguingly quirky.
week_roper_mar_06.jpg
James Roper’s sculptural installations were also able to draw us in, especially knowing that Roper created 10 000 origami flowers over a three-year period.
week_reis_mar_06.jpg
The epoxy polymer she works with may be on the dangerous side, but Klari Reis makes good use of it in her colourful paintings of molecular forms, all named after prescription drugs.
week_pendergast_apr_06.jpg
Joseph Pendergast brought us organic forms of foliage and flora through a mix of techniques.
week_bennett_apr_06.jpg
The horizon is a constant in the abstract paintings of Rebecca Bennett, as is her use of strong colours.
week_white_apr_06.jpg
And Todd White leads us into the weekend with some refreshments. SM

+ Jurgen Rajh's custom fireplace/furnaces are made mostly of stone and metal and appear to radiate heat from their rather large surfaces. The minimalist model above has a long narrow window to watch the fire as it burns. Thanks Jurgen!
