Tea for Two

Chilean designer Sebastian E. proposes Tea for Two, a space-saving way to share a cuppa. This design is practical and easy on the eye, a civilized way to start the day or take a break with a smile. Sebastian E. has a lot more creative ideas up the same sleeve, like the Glove Dress, a halter dress made up of hundreds of latex gloves stitched together and giving a feathery effect, or the soccer shoes made out of soccer balls. OS_project.jpg
We posted Sebastien Wierinck's os00 plastic pipe furniture earlier this month. We wanted to know more, so we talked to him about his project. He explains; "Onsite expresses itself as a system, which is greater than just an object. Using logic of design and production that is in part standardized but is also guided by variables of programming". Programming onsite furniture Sebastien points out, is influenced by the functions of the environment surrounding it, resulting in what form the designed object will eventually take. The OS project has taken many forms, from public and private benches to interior installations integrating light. See more after the jump. JGB

Interview: Charles Trevelyan

charles_trevelyan_designer.jpgA lamp that appears to be sinking into the table it sits on and a self-contained study/shelf with a built-in chair and footstool. All are from the mind of designer Charles Trevelyan. We wanted to know where the inspiration for objects like these came from, so we asked him. Said he, "some such as Titanic emerge from the subconscious when I’m doing something completely unrelated like shopping for groceries, and almost inevitably when I’m furthest from a pen and paper to record them.". Read the rest after the jump and read still more at Pure Contemporary with whom we collaborated for this interview.

Gem

The mouth-blown glasswork of Kate Hume is usually organic in shape and jewel-toned in colour, but her recent Gem collection features harder cuts. The colours, however, are truly inspired by the gemstones after which they are named. The pieces have trails of clear glass added to them, which results in the crystalline effect of minerals and precious stones once cut and polished. Hume, based in Amsterdam, has been designing glass vessels since 1999. SM

Today's City Houses
Posted by Books | 29 Jan 06 | Print Posts

todays_city_houses_book.jpgContemporary design inner city houses don't have front lawns. That's the impression I get from flipping through this book (Amazon Search Inside). City Houses is one of three books in a series by Spanish publisher Links, the other two are Today's Beach Houses and Today's Country Houses. All three feature "forward-looking projects by internationally renowned architects", lots of large format photography, floor plans and commentary by the architects themselves. City Houses is hardcover, has 300 pages, most with images on them, and is available at Amazon for $26.40.
