bathrooms_book_jul_04.jpgThe Good Ideas book.
I have yet to see a MoCo bathroom designs book with a design sensibility from this century - until now. It's not the most avant-garde, but the materials and colors are definitely 2004, this "due in part to homeowners' shifting desires for their bath space--trending away from pulsating showers and energizing whirlpools toward the soothing sanctuary of a home spa--and in part to the ongoing development of new, affordable bathroom fixtures". More than 600 photos showcase innovative bathroom design from designers such as Philippe Starck, Massimo Iosa, and Frog Design. A directory to the featured designers and manufacturers is also included. Paperback, 330 pages, $16.97 at Amazon.

Nanimarquina - UPDATE
Posted by Admin Floorcoverings | 30 Jul 04 | Print Posts

nanimarquina_manuscrit_jul_.jpgRoughly drawn rugs.
Nanimarquina's Black on White rug collection is an artist's interpretation, derived from traditional rug design, minus the color. Manuscrit is shown here. "What do a graphic and industrial designer, a painter, a fashion designer and a writer and art gallery director all do under the same name?... Well, they conceive a collection in which they express their own essence, black on white. Black on white brings together 4 exclusive designs, 4 personal visions of the carpet object whose common element is the choice of the absence of colour to heighten its identity.".

Infinity Climber

little_tikes_infinity_jul_0.jpgFree-form play structure.
"A radical departure from traditional play structures, this sculpturally beautiful piece challenges children to play in a different way. The free-form flowing shape defies flat planes and presents an appearance of organic movement. A drastic departure from static playgrounds, children are challenged to move their bodies around a constantly flowing shape.". For kids 5 - 12 years old. A good age to start thinking about infinity... Via IDFuel.

Hewn and Hammered
Posted by Admin Announcements | 29 Jul 04 | Print Posts

Prolific blogger and MoCo San Francisco editor Joshua Lurie-Terrell has launched a new website devoted to the Arts & Crafts movement called Hewn and Hammered. Joshua will be focusing on "all manner of art and craft as they relate to the Mission, Craftsman and Prairie movements and, to some extent, other related styles.". Side note, the new site will also feature multiple mastheads a la Typograhica (his other site).

flos_junior_hertz_jul_04.jpgTransparent adjustable track lights.
Designer Konstantin Grcic has created a series of injection molded track lights with single or double lights in different sizes that have "transparent finishes for all visible parts". Until now, for me, track lights had lost their allure. Flos adds other designs to their vast collection; Tim Derhaag's 45 Degrees wall and floor lamps, that provide direct or indirect light by rotating the diffuser via a special joint, Antonio Citterio's Beam F aluminum floor lamp and a Citterio/Toan Nguyen collaboration, the Kelvin Spot series for table, floor, wall and ceiling.

douglas_homer_thumb1_jul_04.jpgObvious entertainment furniture.
“Moveable tiles. Concealed storage. Corian, acrylic and stainless steel. An idea of a table surface with the ability to change appearance with each use is based on a simple children’s game. Sliding interlocking tiles move to allow seemingly limitless surface configurations while accessing the added function of concealed storage.”. Other designs by Douglas Homer include Blink storage with unique color/design transitions inspired by UPC codes and television screens, as well as the Bertoia Needs A Trim chair with 1200 strands of closed cell sponge cord.
