MOCO'12: identity and craft
by Harry / January 2, 2013

"Can one, despite the tendency of globalization to erase national and cultural differences, still understand identity as something associated with particular places?"

That was the question asked in August by Norwegian design studio Permafrost when they created a series of toys reflecting on Nordic identity for the New Nordic - Architecture and Identity exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark.

2012 was a year that saw a noticeable rise in identity and craft - with a contemporary twist. Pete Oyler and Nora Mattingly's Assembly collection captured a revival in American craft. The Musterzimmer show at Depot Basel, Swiss craft and design (even though Matylda disagrees). Czech design collective Vyrobeno Lesem's (Made by Forest) exhibition at Vienna Design Week 2012, centuries of Bohemian glass tradition.
