Designers Jeremy Murier and Daniel Martinez have created a personal heating device that uses heat from a fire.
The Volcanic Casing is a "relay object" that, when heated over a fire, can transport heat. Made with only two common materials, lava stone and oak, the stone is placed in a fire and then covered by the oak casing for transport.
Says Martinez, "Natural and inexpensive, they are simply machined and assembled which can also permit to have a humanitarian context for it use. The absence of obsolete electronic system makes it an object durable, fully recyclable, that preserves the environment throughout its life cycle."
"To use it, you need to open the case and put the lava stone into the fire during a precise and short time. Once the heat is satisfying, you just reclose the case to preserve it and protect the user."
The volcanic casing is one of 12 selected Finalists for the 2011 International Prix Émile Hermès Competition celebrated in Paris.
