Size + Matter: Shigeru Ban & Marc Newson
by Jaime / September 24, 2009

For London Design Week, Marc Newson and Shigeru Ban were commissioned to create installations along the south bank of the Thames River in order to "push the boundaries of what material can do." Newson's piece, titled Supercell, is constructed out of hexagonal panels of enameled steel. The designer was inspired by cell growth and modeled the shape from marine and biological forms. Further down the walkway is Paper Tower, Shigeru Ban's sixty-six foot tall tower made from condensed cardboard tubes. The cone-shaped structure is reinforced with metal joints and opens in the middle, allowing passers-by to walk through.
