Clockwise from top left; Flow Tante Wera chairs by AK-LH, Tonium's Pacemaker pocket-sized multimedia player, ChauhanStudio's Lila line of kitchenware and Klaus Happaniemi's for Iittala's Satumetsä line of tableware. More after the jump.

+ The Flow Tante Wera chairs by AK-LH have graphic depictions of the inner workings of the human body. A line of coordinated linens and soft furnishings has just been released, based on the success of Flow.

met_pacemaker.jpg
+ Tonium's Pacemaker is a pocket-sized multimedia player that offers full professional DJ functionality that contains the equivalent of two turntables, a mixer and an entire record collection. The Pacemaker is part of a larger platform of free downloadable software and an online music community that allows members to legally share music.

met_wall.jpg
+ The Structural Steel Pivoting Wall, designed by Miguel Vicens and built primarily by Ramiro Carranza, can rotate at about 120 degrees to change the aspect of the space for which it was built. When not being moved, the wall (which weighs in at over half a ton) is locked in place by its casters.

met_bar.jpg
+ Sideboard is a new piece by Special Projects Division that acts as a handy mobile sideboard or a bar. Wheeling it over to the table is a tidy way to get an extra surface.

met_iittala2.jpg
+ Satumetsä is Klaus Happaniemi's new theme for Iittala's line of tableware. Following the winter motif of Taika, Satumetsä is a springtime forest. Happaniemi drew inspiration from nineteenth century fabrics.

penttinen_apple_pie.jpg
+ Anu Penttinen's Birds by Penttinen collection for Iittala has just been joined by a flock of spring chicks: Apple Pie, Cloud 9 and Sweet Marenque. Handmade at the Nuutajärvi glassworks in Finland, these glass birds are meant to be mixed, matched and admired.

met_chauhan.jpg
+ Habitat has just launched Lula, ChauhanStudio's line of melamine kitchenware. The utensils and containers join ChauhanStudio's varied line of accessories and electronics.

I am actually quite disappointed at Klaus Haapaniemi's Satumetsa designs for Iittala. It is way too close to his previous success, the Taika series (which I love and own), especially the white Taika, and offers very little new. He even uses similar birds and fan-like images as in Taika.

I'd say that this is a typical situation of a designer not being able to get past the success of earlier work and therefore copying it, or worse, a designer too lazy or greedy to really care to design something new and creative?

I also don't see anything "wintery" in Taika, although the new Satumetsa does have spring-like colors. In addition, I see nothing in Satumetsa that would refer to "19th century fabrics" but perhaps Haapaniemi knows better.

By the way, Satumetsa means Fairytale forest in Finnish. Taika means Magic.

The people to launch the pacemaker are launching a new product soon. Will post it in on my blog as soon as they let me know if you're interested. It's such a great product!
