Best MoCo Architecture This Week
by Harry / March 7, 2009

This week's picks:

+ Paul McKean's Neal Creek Residence at Contemporist, "The Neal Creek residence treads lightly upon its surroundings, maximizing valley and water views with minimal impact to the natural environment. The owners - windsurfing and snowboarding enthusiasts - were interested in a modest weekend retreat that would be highly efficient and ecologically minded."

+ ODOS architects' Lower Grangegorman at Materialicious, "This new residential development, for a motorcycle enthusiast, adjacent to No.10 Grangegorman Villas, Grangegorman, Dublin 7 is an alternative reaction to the more traditional city centre infill residential projects; an unapologetic piece of architecture sitting within a strong urban context defined by both site and planning constraints." Via archiweb.

+ Carl Verdickt's Greenhouse at Yatzer, "Emerging amidst a myriad of Eco-homes, the 'greenhouse' stands out because of its affordability and heat trapping ability. The structure is framed by a ready-made steel structure and encased in an alternating series of super-insulating transparent glass and translucent polycarbonate plates."

+ Simon Carver's renovated Harts Lane house and guest house at Desire To Inspire. Via ffffound.

+ october ueda + nakagawa architects' halfrooms house at rolu, "a unique response to filling confined spaces with light... takes the idea of window location to a whole new dimension."

+ Hiroshi Yoshikawa Architects Design's Tea House in Umemi Kyuan home extension at architecturephoto.net, "This curved-grass-roof teahouse has the same volume as the carport, which is made of white wall, and same material: burned cedar of the exterior wall as that of the existing house. And is intended to be simple, earthy and moderate for the surroundings."

+ Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects' 11-unit Formosa 1140 housing project at Dezeen, "Located in the heart of West Hollywood, this new eleven unit housing project emphasizes the central importance of shared open space for the residents and the community. Formosa takes what would be the internalized open space of the courtyard and moves it to the exterior of the building to create a park which occupies approximately one third (4,600 sf) of the project site."

+ Dieter Van Everbroeck's updated bungalow at Dwell, "the couple fell for a spectacular 300-year-old beech tree in a former deer park of a chateau on the outskirts of the historic Flemish city of Ghent. It just happened to come with a bungalow."

+ Asasaka Shinichiro Atelier's Oresen House at What We Do Is Secret.

+ Asasaka Shinichiro Atelier's House for Mr. Romeo at What We Do Is Secret.

+ Asasaka Shinichiro Atelier's House in forest at SpaceInvading.

+ 51N4E's 51N4E BRUGES project at SpaceInvading, "In the old centre of Bruges architects 51N4E converted an old shop into a contemporary weekend-home."

+ Kohn Shnier architects' Laneway House at designboom, "a small 1,300 square foot home located in a toronto laneway. Despite its small scale and tucked away location the residence houses a family of five and two pets."

+ Tezuka Architects' House to catch the forest at Plataforma Arquitectura, a house with "a sloping roof to maximize the view over the treetops. The differences in the height of the ceiling fitting with the different uses of the rooms."

+ Tezuka Architects' Roof House at Plataforma Arquitectura, a house that "has chairs, table, kitchen and shower on the roof. Each family member has his/her own skylight, with a ladder to access the roof."
