Studio FRST's new TV concept, 16943, is presented as a technological sculpture, a black picture on a glass base. The screen is designed to work as a 2-in-1, offering two formats for viewing: a 16/9 format for films and 4/3 for television. This concept is based on the needs filled by contemporary screens.

Amazing Concept! I hope it makes it to production.

Super great design! Perfect to fit all needs without spoiling too much extra-space! Hope the production costs aren't much higher.

Why not incorporate 2.35:1 AR too? Cover all the bases.

This is a ridiculous design. If you had a rectangular screen the full width and full height, you'd have the same size wide-screen view, and a larger 4:3 view. It would also cost less, because you wouldn't need to have a custom manufactured LCD or plasma element.

Good design is good, but this is a geometry fail.

When I first saw this I had the same thought as lee gibson, but since then I've been annoyed watching TV with two almost-black bars running down either side of the image. This idea has grown on me, and since ridiculously high-end TVs are nothing new, I'd imagine the high price point of a design item like this would actually be a draw to some people.

First, making it the full width and height would not change the size of either frame.

Second, if it were a touchscreen, and the unused portion of the screen turned into a control panel when black, that would be a great feature (since there are no buttons to be seen).
