Curve by Xin Xu
by sabine7 / November 24, 2008

Helsinki-based Xin Xu's stainless steel fruit bowl, Curve, is inspired by the Taoist school of Chinese philosophy. Not surprising that the theme that relates to the design is called emptiness. The design is based on the notion from Lao-Tzu's Tao Te Ching that "... We mold clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that makes the vessel useful. We fashion wood for a house, but it is the emptiness inside that makes it livable. We work with the substantial, but it is the emptiness that we use." As Xu points out, we use the emptiness more than the existing parts. Curve illustrates this concept quite beautifully.

Interesting minimalist design! This bowl reminds me of another bowl I've been seeing around lately -- the Hug by DESU Design. The difference between the two is that the Hug lies flat on a table. http://desudesign.com/accessories/surfaceline/hug/

What a waste in packaging, why not just sell a pencil with a note that tells you to draw a circle around the fruit... and u could package the pencil in the note.

hahah.
I've enjoyed many of the things on this site, but I must say... this is simply not a fruit bowl. I'm going to go cut and bend a hanger from my closet and attempt to resell it as a minimalist salad bowl. It will exemplify the Sanskrit scripture that tells us -- people are stupid and will pay for anything if it's marketed properly.
