Flotilla
by sabine7 / September 9, 2008

Tom Loeser's new series of work is a fascinating flotilla of conceptual boats. Using traditional boatbuilding techniques, Loeser, who is also a professor in the wood/furniture area of the University of Wisconsin's art department, played with function and alternative means of movement. The resulting forms are fluid, almost poetic, but dysfunctional, as the designer tried to create boats that might swim, screw or roll through the water. Each boat or sculpture is named after an image inspired by its potential movement: Eddy is like a dog chasing its tail; Screw would imply rotation; Swim wriggles fishlike through the water.
