Comfortable Ceramics
by sabine7 / July 23, 2008

The notion of functional ceramics usually brings tableware to mind, not furniture, but Jonathan Trotter uses industrial crank clay to press mould fully functional stools. The green one, above, is embossed with pattern taken from kitsch wallpaper; the one after the jump incorporates traditional leather upholstery buttons. Trotter also has a line of Victorian door accessories that includes laser-etched ceramic doorknobs. Drawing on the ideas of nostalgia and forgotten identity, Trotter aims to mix traditional decorative techniques and modern technology to create items that are at once functional, durable and beautiful.
