Sat June 28, 8 PM: Closing-Night Dinner

The closing-night dinner was utterly transporting, staged in a former 1933 slaughterhouse that’s being converted into a restaurant and event space by a team of forward-thinking developers. Lyndon Neri outfitted the striking concrete interior with an enfilade of Emeco chairs and Richard Hutton’s new metal tables (“this is the first time I’ve actually seen them,” he noted approvingly). Above, Lyndon strung an art installation of “laundry” made from folded newspapers—his cheeky take on the locals’ habit of air-drying their skivvies for all to see. Celebrity chef David Laris whipped up the most delicious and elegant meal; next time I’m in Shanghai, I’m definitely visiting his restaurant on the Bund. I sat across from Andrew Yang, who toasted the raucous crowd of 100 % Design Shanghai supporters, noting that the dinner came together in a matter of days: “Proof of how fast you can build things in China!” he laughed. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
