One of the most beautifully curated exhibitions in Milan last week was the Mindcraft exhibition in Zona Tortona, an oasis of calm amidst the chaos and excitement in the streets. The dozen Danish designers selected for this show represent the move from handcraft to mindcraft. Traditionally the focus has been placed on materials and technique in the Danish arena of crafts, but a newer conceptual approach adds the element of design to the art and craft. It was delightful to see some of the works up close: the ring by Carolina Vallejo is huge! The Vaginal Mirror by Christin Johansson was one of the most unusual appliances we saw in Milan, yet once the moment of “Oh!”had passed, it was followed by “Of course, that makes sense!”. It was clear that materials are still a major focus, and the space used to show them allowed for a careful examination of each item.
