Here at MoCo Loco the in-box is always overflowing. One question we received this week is representative of a certain genre of inquiry: How can I further develop my idea for a great piece of furniture or product?
People with no furniture design experience or background, but with detailed drawings and ideas, most often put this type of question to us. At this pre-prototype stage, they ask what to do and where to go next. So now we ask you, dear readers: How would you respond?
In the meantime, this book might be useful in answering a few questions:Making It: Manufacturing Techniques for Product Design.

Depending on what it is, you can find independent firms who will make it into a prototype; then get it patented, trademarked and copyrighted and send out letters to like-minded manufacturers to see if they would be interested in partnering with you on it. In other words, you will be showing it around so it needs to be protected and you are looking for someone who already has distribution in the markets and can get the product made. So you'll be giving up some of the profits this way, but it's faster, less of a commitment financially and will take less to get going. If it is an excellent idea....have someone help create more of a program and create a booth and go into a trade show with it. Badabing, badabang, your there. I've done it for several people. I know it can be done. You do need some start-up money though, if for nothing else for getting the prototype done and getting it protected from intellectual property theft.
